Dragon's Lair - North Beach - San Francisco

This project is an exploration of scale, personality, and unapologetic expression, where a compact North Beach apartment becomes a richly layered world of color, texture, and art. Tucked along a quiet street in San Francisco, the home embraces its small footprint while expanding emotionally into something immersive, personal, and entirely its own.

At just 400 square feet, the space was designed to feel collected rather than constrained. Deep, saturated greens wrap the walls, creating a moody canvas for an ever-evolving gallery of artwork, posters, and objects. The home reads almost like a living collage, where each piece feels discovered, placed with instinct, and tied to the client’s creative life.

Our client, a tattoo artist with an extensive collection of art, prints, and figurines, approached the space with a maximalist sensibility and a clear desire for self-expression. Rather than edit down, we leaned in. Layers of pattern, canvas, ink, and paper unfold across the home, punctuated by jewel-toned accents in magenta, velvet, and lacquered finishes.

The result is playful, slightly surreal, and deeply personal.Furniture and accessories were curated to feel eclectic and a bit offbeat. Vintage finds sit alongside sculptural pieces, including a dragon table and French lamps that bring a sense of character and history.

These elements ground the space while allowing for moments of surprise and humor to emerge naturally. The home is also shared with two distinctive companions, a one-eyed cat and a spirited Bengal kitten, whose presence adds another layer of personality and movement.

Their energy is reflected in the space itself, which feels alive, curious, and just a little wild. This project is not about restraint. It is about creating a world within a small footprint, where art, color, and individuality take the lead. A maximalist, art-forward retreat that proves scale has nothing to do with impact.
